My story begins in the mountains
I was born into a poor family in a mountain village in Yunnan, southwest China.
To visitors, Yunnan is often a place of beautiful mountains and remarkable scenery. To me, it is home. It is also a place where making a living takes patience, effort and determination.
When I look at products from my hometown, I see more than something to sell. I think about the people who grow, tend and sort them, and the work that happens long before a buyer sees the finished product.
An unexpected journey to Guangdong
Life eventually took me to Guangdong to work.
I did not leave home with a plan to build an international business. I was looking for a way forward, learning as I went and trying to improve my circumstances.
Through continued effort, I unexpectedly encountered website technology. It opened up an idea: perhaps I could build a small window through which people elsewhere could discover good products from my hometown.
Learning to open that window
Having an idea was easier than knowing how to make it happen.
Differences in internet access between China and overseas made reaching people in other countries less straightforward than I had imagined. I also had much to learn about building websites and presenting product information clearly.
So I kept learning.
Gradually, the website became a way to connect two parts of my life: the skills I was developing away from home and the place I still wanted to support.
Why I began with Yunnan dried morels
MorchellaHub starts with dried morel mushrooms from Yunnan.
Through Dianbei Select, an independent trading company working with cooperating growers, I hope to introduce these products to importers, distributors and food businesses overseas.
For buyers, a meaningful introduction needs more than a beautiful photograph. It needs clear information about size, stem trimming, appearance, packaging and the proposed lot.
That is the practical work I want this website to support: helping people understand the product and begin a useful conversation.
More than a financial return
I want this business to sustain itself, but exceptional financial returns are not my main ambition.
I hope to make more friends across borders, create opportunities for people back home and let more of the world discover a taste of Yunnan.
A conversation may begin with a product inquiry. With time, I hope it can grow into trust, friendship and a relationship worth keeping.
I do not claim that one website can change life in the mountains. But I believe a useful connection is worth building.
A vision beyond one product
Dried morels are the beginning.
In the future, I hope to explore other products from Yunnan and the wider highland regions, including truffles, matsutake, cordyceps, termite mushrooms, notoginseng and gastrodia.
These are future directions, rather than a list of products currently available. Each category will need its own sourcing knowledge and clear product information before it can be introduced responsibly.
An invitation from home
If you are curious about Yunnan, its products or the story behind this website, you are welcome to get in touch.
Tell us about your business, your market or what brought you here.
I left my hometown to find a way forward. My hope is that what I build can also become a way to give something back.
Let good products begin the conversation. Let friendship be what grows.
With gratitude
My heartfelt thanks to zhangpeng, OpenAI and my website-building companion, Codex, for helping me turn this idea into a website.
And thank you for taking the time to read the story behind MorchellaHub.
